IP Protection Level Explained

IP protection level can be simply described as the "armor" level of electronic devices.

IP stands for Ingress Protection. Simply put, it uses two digits to tell us just how robust this device is.


Step 1: Deconstruct these two numbers

The two numbers following the IP address have very clear roles:

The first number (0-6): Protects against solids. It protects against fingers, screwdrivers, and even tiny dust particles.

The second number (0-8): Liquid resistant. It protects against raindrops, sprays, and even direct immersion in water.

A mnemonic rhyme: "First, it protects against dust; second, it protects against water; the larger the number, the better."

There's no need to memorize all the standards; the most common ones are actually just these:

Common Scenarios

IP20

It's designed to prevent large leaks but not small ones. It can protect against accidental finger contact, but dust and water can easily get in.

Indoor standard power strips and switches.

IP54

"Waterproof for daily life." Not much dust can get in, and a little water won't hurt (like getting caught in a light rain).

Indoor underground parking equipment, standard server racks.

IP65

"All-around flushing". Dust cannot get in at all, and it can withstand water spray from a hose.

Outdoor scenic area streetlights and ordinary surveillance cameras.

IP67

"Short-time bath". It can be taken out of 1 meter deep water after half an hour and still be used.

Outdoor intelligent street light controller, high-end mobile phone.

IP68

"Diving champion". It can be submerged in water for extended periods and represents the highest level of protection currently available.

Diving equipment and underwater lighting.


Step 3: Three "little-known facts" to avoid pitfalls

"Waterproof" doesn't protect against "water vapor": An IP68-rated phone will be fine if it falls into a swimming pool, but if you take it into a sauna or bathroom, water vapor can easily penetrate it. This is because the molecular structure of water vapor is much smaller than that of water droplets.


Protection ratings can "decline": Over time, the sealing strips will age. What was initially IP67 might only be IP54 after two years.


The numbers are not additive: IP67 does not mean it includes IP65. Some equipment can withstand immersion (IP7), but may not be able to withstand high-pressure jets (IP5/6). Therefore, some top-of-the-line equipment will be labeled IP65/IP67.
